What to Ask Your Wedding Venue in Nova Scotia
(Free Checklist for Intimate Weddings & Elopements)

Planning a small wedding or elopement in Nova Scotia? We’ve photographed hundreds of intimate celebrations across the province since 2004 — from Peggy’s Cove to Cape Breton vineyards. These are the exact questions we wish every couple asked before booking their venue.

Capacity & Guest Experience

  • ✓ What is the maximum capacity for an intimate ceremony/reception (under 50 guests)?
  • ✓ Is there a minimum guest count required?
  • ✓ Do you allow ceremonies and portraits on-site, or is it reception-only?
  • ✓ Are there quiet, private areas for couple portraits away from guests?
  • ✓ Is the venue pet-friendly? (Many Nova Scotia couples bring their dogs!)

Photography & Lighting

  • ✓ Are outside photographers allowed without restriction?
  • ✓ Are there any areas off-limits for photos (e.g., certain gardens, buildings)?
  • ✓ What time does the sun set here in [your wedding month]? (We can help!)
  • ✓ Is there indoor space with good natural light in case of rain?
  • ✓ Are drones permitted for aerial shots?

Weather & Rain Plans

  • ✓ What is your indoor backup space if it rains?
  • ✓ Can we move freely between indoor and outdoor areas if the weather changes?
  • ✓ Do you provide clear umbrellas or have covered walkways?

Logistics & Timing

  • ✓ What time can we arrive for photos before the ceremony?
  • ✓ Is there a “getting ready” space on-site (cottage, bridal suite, etc.)?
  • ✓ What time must everything end (noise curfew)?
  • ✓ Are there extra fees for staying later?
  • ✓ Is parking easy for guests (especially important at coastal locations)?

Permits, Vendors & Restrictions

  • ✓ Do you require us to use your caterer/bar service, or can we bring our own?
  • ✓ Is open flame allowed (candles, sparklers, bonfires)?
  • ✓ Are amplified speakers/DJs allowed outdoors?
  • ✓ Do you need public liability insurance from vendors?
  • ✓ For public locations (e.g., Peggy’s Cove, parks): Do you help with permits?
